Welcome to the 25th annual SKUP-conference. The conference takes place in Tonsberg from April 4th to April 6th. Here you will find some information about the international sessions during the conference.

The conference agenda can be found here. Its produced in Sched, and its availeable for both PC, mobile and tablets. Seminars marked with (en) are held in english. The rest is in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
This year the SKUP-conference also include four seminar we have called Free Media. This is seminars done in cooperation with the Instiute for Journalism and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Cost
The general conference fee is set to 2.700 NOK (aprox €325). The hotel costs 3.750 for two nights and all meals included in single room and 2.900 per person in double room. The accomodation includes dinner on Friday. Breakfast, lunch and galla dinner on Saturday. Breakfast and lunch on Sunday.

Friday April 4th
17:45 A year with Datadriven journalism
This session presents different examples on how data can be transformed to impressive, complex and visual investigative journalism. Some of the best journalists on datadriven reporting in Norway and abroad tell about what they been doing the past year.
19:15 Learn to connect data
With basic Access, you are able to connect data from different sources and discover connections that noone seen before. In this handson-session, led by the investigative reporter Andrew Lehren from New York Times, you will learn basic techniques to establish a database, import data and analys them. Basic knowledge in Excel is needed to participate in this class
Saturday April 5th
09:00 Follow the Money
Learn the latest techniques to track money and people across boarders. In this session, Miranda Patrucic from Sarajevo, will demonstrate the latest version of «Investigative Dashboard», wich is a tool developed by OCCRP, Organized Crime and Corruption Project. If you bring names of people or companies you want to track, Patrucic will help you investigate them right here and now.
10:30 From pure data to visual stories
Giannina Segnini is head of the investigative unit at «La Nacion». Shes teached hundreds of journalists around Latin-America in compterassisted reporting. Now she teamed up with the well-known digital designer, Mariana Santos, who used to work at «The Guardian». Together they will show the way from huge dataharvests to refined, visual presentations.
10:30 Tracking the Brunstad Christian Church money
This session shows how local norwegian investigative journalism can take advantage of an international network of journalists, and use tools like OCCRPs «Investigative Dashboard». Together with Miranda Patrucic will Vegar Knutsen Vatn from Tonsbergs Blad show how he and his collegues Lars Døvle Larsen and Øystein Sørumshagen followed the money connected to Brunstad Christian Church.

When someone have talked, they often want to keep it hidden from public. And often the succeed. Whats not possible to hide is formal connections between humans. They can serve at the same board, members of the same club or forum. NodeXL is a software for analysis of social networks. If your able to use this software, you can discover connections you wouldnt seen otherwise.
10:30 Journalism when the drones rain down
How is it to do journalism in countries that have become battlefields in US shady dronewars? The journalists Umar Cheema (Pakistand) and Atiaf Alwazir (Yemen) have both covered this controversial subject from their homelands. At SKUP and Free Media they will tell their stories and help others to cover it.

In this session you will learn to use open datasources to track shipscargo from harbour to harbour, from country to country. It all starts with a unique number on a container and we can track the shippment step by step. It will be shown examples from Norway, Europe, America.....well, the entire world.
12:00 Research social media
Facebook Graphs opens a world of search-oportunities you could never imagine. Internet research specialist Paul Myers from BBC takes you on a journey inside the worlds most famous social network. Paul also reveals some of the latest techniques you can use in Twitter and LinkedIn when doing journalistic research. To get full benefit of the session you need to change your language settings in Facebook to "English (American)".
12:00 War, lies and Youtube
Its become to dangerous to cover the war in Syria on the ground. But how do we cover a conflict when we are not able to be present and all parts sends out huge amounts of propaganda. Who can we thrust on the ground, when international media goes home? Hamoud al-Mahmoud is editor for Alqtisadi Magazine in Damascus, Syria. He feels the war on his body every day. Eliot Higgins is a british blogger who covers the war from his home in Leicester, thru social media. He revealed Assads use of clusterbombs and chemical weapons against civilians. The seminar is part of "Free Media", in cooperations with the Norwegian Institute for Journalism and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
14:00 Covering the war from the sofa
Some of the best and most accurate coverage of the war in Syria comes from a sofa i Leicester, UK. The unemployed financier and admin worker Eliot Higgins established his blog "Brown Moses" while taking care of his young son at home. Thru the blog, Higgins, have revealed how syrian army have used both clusterbombs and chemical weapons, despite the government denials. Information from Brown Moses are extensively used by the worlds largest and most resourcefull newsmedia.

Samba rhythms resounded in the streets when Rio de Janeiro was awarded the World Cup . But the country is on a different fire only months before football truly «is coming home». For a long time the riots have taken over for the samba in the street. Brazil has been on the rising. In reality all costs are covered by the public. At the expense of the average Brazilian. The Brazilian journalist Chamil Chade have covered Brazil' preparations for the World Cup for more than half a decade. He has uncovered corruption, political breach and the fury that has have hit the streets. . Andrew Jennings is banned by FIFA and has all his adult life revealed corruption and cronyism among sports bosses in the IOC and FIFA .

Paul Myers from BBC will teach you how to target your search to get the answers your looking for. In his usual, humorous manner, Paul give away his knowledge in an entertaining hour of useful, practical tips that apply to your everyday work.
